Critiquing Your Car Photos: Vol. 3

Sorry for the audio not being great, that was hubris on my part. If I didn't get to you, please be patient, I'm working on hopefully being able to turn these around faster and more frequent in the future. I hope you can still get value from seeing me evaluate other photos. If you want to submit photos for a future installment: - Please only send just a few jpgs, they don't need to be super high...

Sorry this took so long! I was pretty close to finished last week, and then a weird "derecho" storm knocked out our power for 4 days. Please don't roast me too bad for my roasts. If you want to submit photos for a future installment: - Please only send just a few jpgs, they don't need to be super high-resolution - For simplicity, I’d prefer no zip files or WeTransfer links - Tell me exactly how...

Gear I Regret Buying for Car Photography

All the gear I regret buying for car photography. 🤦♂️ I don't have a lot of regrets. Most of the stuff I’ve bought, I have found uses for. But this video is about the things that, looking back, are hard to justify. Everything is a learning experience, but maybe I can spare you from having similar learning experiences. How Racing Media Accreditation Works

This is one I get asked a lot. I don't have all the all the answers, but this is what I can tell you about the media accreditation process, plus some thoughts on how to achieve what it takes to shoot from the other side of the fence at motorsports events. We all start somewhere, and that includes every single person who's trackside at Formula 1. But remember that photo credentials are limited -...
Reacting to Hundreds of Angry Comments on my Reel about Porsche Door Sounds
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.5 месяцев назад
I messed up. I created a Reel (also a RUclips Short: ruclips.net/user/shortsq_PZFmgJ63Q?feature=share) wherein I made the outlandish claim that the Porsche 993 Carrera RS had ...the best car door close sound. It was viewed by a lot of people, and many of them disagreed with my claim pretty strongly. I never explained my criteria for "best," so I can definitely see how people got riled up about ...
Understanding Off-Camera Flash
Просмотров 7 тыс.5 месяцев назад
#tutorial #photography #flash I recently explained the principles of using off-camera flash in my interiors video. It was a tutorial within a tutorial, and even though I shot some images in order to demonstrate what I was explaining, it wasn’t nearly as thorough as I wanted it to be. So I’ve gone and shot some more, and I tried to be more scientific about it to help you visualize the difference...
Photograph Car Interiors Like a Pro
Просмотров 22 тыс.6 месяцев назад
I’ve talked about shooting interior photos in little pieces, throughout a number of videos, but today I’m going to expand on this subject specifically, and compile all my car interior photography tips into once place. This is far more complex than can be put into a catchy, numbered list of tips, there are just a lot of variables. So instead of a simple listicle, I’ve divided this into four cate...

Eight Essential Pieces of Photo Gear that I Couldn't Live Without

Car auctions and premium car listings: I've talked a lot about techniques for these types of shoots, but I've never talked about the gear I use. A big part of this type of shoot is being able to work quickly and efficiently, and I think I’ve gotten my kit down to the essentials that allows me shoot everything I need, at a fairly high standard, with the least amount of fuss. 0:00 Intro 0:30 Came...

I got my first media accreditation at the 2023 Le Mans 24 Hour race, I was 17. I completely agree with you. But I think as young photographers, we shouldn't see accreditations like THE achievement of our career... It takes nothing from a race organiser to give you a media pass. I really think the thing we should focus on is how to sell pictures, this is an achievement to me.
5:25 Funny this is my absolute go to lens when it comes down to autosport event photography. For me it would be Lightroom presets.
it's no doubt a great lens, and I could see it being an excellent lens for motorsports. I will probably try it again (4th time's a charm!), but currently, the 85 just doesn't have a place in my bag if I'm already bringing the 70-200 with me.
I just want to a car show this Saturday To take pictures and videos Instead of the Crowd being where I wanted them to be they kept trying not to get in my way I had to keep telling to go ahead it ok lol
lol, that happens! Either embrace the clear shot, or sometimes if I'm doing a long exposure on a tripod, I'll look away or at my phone when I click the shutter, so people kinda of ignore the camera and walk through the frame it I'm not looking at back of the camera.
@@capturingthemachine hey that a good idea lol i didnt think of that, ill try that next time. thanks for the tip
Ok. Fair enough.
thank you for submitting images, I really appreciate it!
🤔🌙
Loved this video. Justin is an awesome dude.
Couldn't agree more! The Moonstone story might have a new chapter sometime this year 🌝
Use a long lens on a tripod set at 50% of the cars total height to avoid most of what he has discussed here - if possible shoot on an overcast day -
well the long lens part is spot on…
As much as I want to argue against this, I've mostly been shooting with a digital rangefinder lately. Not necessarily for car photography lately, but I do see your point.
Wow! Amazing video
You are so kind, thanks!
I’m on my 4th 4x4!🤣 It’s a Twinair (Mk4) and I love it. Previously owned a Mk3 and loved that too. Before that, a 4x4 Sisley with the fun gauges that warn you’re about to tip over just before you do. And the very first was the original 4x4 with removable deckchair seats. The original design was just so clever + functional, cute + chunky. Loved ‘em all
Thanks for the feedback - plenty of great learning points - I'll be back... 🙂
Thanks for submitting photos Matt, and for taking the feedback in stride! I look forward to seeing your progress ✨
1. Embrace the crowd 2. Find details (using telephoto lens) 3. Find framing 4. Take pictures of dogs
Really good video 👍
Thanks!
Probably a silly question but do I have it in burst mode or single shot? Just want to improve my rollers
Not a silly question, burst is best, especially when you’re doing slower shutter, like 1/15th or 1/20th of a second. The first and last shots might be blurry just from your finger pushing/releasing the shutter, but the ones in between are more likely to be stable. It’s annoying because you have more to sort and edit, but you’ll have more options and probably sharper results.
@@capturingthemachine thanks bro...will definitely try it out again when I get the chance 👍🙏🙏
Another great video dude!
thanks man!
I like the Bentley shot, it looks classy and natural (except the sun ?)
There was nothing technically wrong with it, it just seemed a little lazier than the other photos submitted by the photographer, who is clearly very talented. The issues I had with the photo were minor, but it led to a broader tangent about 'supercar spotter' photography, which I find dull and uncreative most of the time.
Another great installment of critiquing car photos. Thanks for doing this.
thanks for watching!
Enjoyed watching this installment of critiquing, and definitely looking forward to the next.
Glad you enjoyed it!
That Jimny photo was pretty exquisite
I almost made that the thumbnail!
I Will have to agree with everyone else. I don't think you are being mean at all. Critique is what makes people better, and if anyone didn't want it then maybe they should just abstain from these type of things
Thank you Filipe!
„Another BMW with objectionable styling … I laughed so hard😂
hahaha
This was an interesting watch. My top pick is the Ford Focus ST at sunset, from North Wales Car Photography. Another top pick would be the Ford Ranger in the desert canyon. I would've liked to have seen that last picture of the Lamborghini at sunset coming around the corner instead of shot from behind. I look forward to your next critique.
good insights!
If sebastian reads this: Lustig dich hier zu sehen, wir haben uns öfters bei den Auto-meets gesehen😂
Wow you are really churning out the videos! Appreciate it alot
No prob! It would be great to be able to do these weekly, but it might be feast or famine until I figure out a good workflow 😭
Kevin, thanks so much for the critique and feedback 🙏🏼
My pleasure, thank you!
Looking at these videos and applying the critique to my own photos makes me want to redo a lot of my pictures 😅 in a good way tho. It gives me a lot more ideas
fantastic, I love to hear that
We all appreciate the feedback you're giving
thanks for watching!
Love the series, thank you.
Glad to hear it, thank you!
You're giving your critique of our photos, I don't think you've been harsh at all. We can't get better without criticism and ways to do better. Thanks for continuing to put out these critique videos.
Thanks for this comment, I really appreciate it! Sometimes, something in a photo can spark a larger issue or photography trend that I want to talk about. I'm glad people can see that I'm not intending to dump all this baggage on one person's work, but speaking about a broader thing usually 😄
Thank you for the video! It's really nice to see others awesome work and learn from them.
thank you!
If i were to shoot at 200mm, would i still get a similar DOF on an apsc camera?
It's been a while such I've used APS-C, but the depth of field would be slightly reduced, I think you'd need a 300mm lens to get the same depth of field as on a 200mm full frame.
Best shots were the Bronco and AMG GT. Yellow GT3 would have liked to have seen it with the sun behind the camera. Looking forward to your next critique!
thank you!
I am super stoked at this series! I've been eagerly looking for some advice and i worked up the courage to submit some photos. Hope you can check them out!
I got them, thank you so much for sending!
FYI: check control panel on the E30. Sort of like a pre-flight check on various systems (lights, coolant, washer fluid, engine oil). Standard on E30's.
ahh very cool to know this, thanks! BMW used to be great, what happened
Awesome to see your take on people's imagens once again! Waiting for the next episodes 🙏
Very soon - thanks a ton!
HI! Will You continue this series about Critiquing Car Photos? I sent You one photo of BMW F31 from Gdynia in Poland. This photo did not appear in both episodes of this series :(
Yes, the series will continue and I am not skipping anyone. I got over 120 submissions in the first 24 hours, so I'm going to get through them as fast as I can 😄
@@capturingthemachine Wooow! What a great response on your idea! Thank You for your fast answer and I will wait patiently for your critique! :D Have a nice day :)
@@pawe553 no problem, thank you for your patience!
"Iphone 0" bwahahaha... possibly true.. It was 2007.
😆
some very talented photographers here!
1000%!
Thanks for the critique! The CTS-V is silver. Good point, a more consistent color grade would make the V shots work better together! My only lens is a Sigma 24mm-70mm on an A7IV, and these shots were at the 50mm to 70mm range. In the AMG photo the crooked cloud is the horizon. I want it removed, too! Many thanks! Mike
Great shots, Mike, thanks for sending those in!
Too bad didn't get to send mine! Don't think mines are worthy of your feedback! But anyways, I've learnt a lot from u! Thx for everything u have taught me through your videos.
thanks so much! No matter what level you're at, there's someone out there that can learn something from your photos
Great information. Plenty of tips to use out in the friend. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
great to get feedback, thanks! will definitely send in some more photos at a later time if you continue this series. btw. the BBS wheels on the Scirocco are real, you've got a good eye👍
thanks for sending those, that was a fantastic scene!
@@capturingthemachine thank you 😃
Thank you for the amazing Video. Love watching every second.
thank you so much!
Still havent seen my images yet, but also i have upgraded my camera body and editing style so may send more of my recent images for the future! These videos help with ideas too. Love seeing other peoples work!
thank you so much, you have the right attitude! I will get to everyone, I'm hoping I can do videos every week or so, but in the meantime I'm glad that you can benefit from watching other photographers' work 😄
Thank you for making another video on the series. My photos nowhere to be found 😢 i hope you haven't forgotten about them
Same here
I will definitely get to them, there were just a lot of submissions, and I'm going in order of how they were received. In the meantime, I hope there's still value in seeing discussions on other photos!
@@capturingthemachine for sure! We all are here to learn, and what's better than learning from other fellow photographers' photos? I was just curious because i sent my photos the same day you announced "critiquing your photos"
@@arianjamali6183 I totally get it, thanks for being patient and still watching. 😄 You're #57 in the sequence, so you won't be in the next one, but for sure the one after that (I'm keeping these around 30 mins instead of an hour like before). And I promise it wont' take two months to do the next two videos 😆
@@capturingthemachine thank you for responding - looking forward to next two videos 😃
First in line 🥹 I’ll take my licks. The mustang was a dewy morning with coastal sunrise filling in. I hadn’t been up close with the new ‘24 up to that point and had to stop to get a snap. Remainder internalized. I’ll take these critiques and work with them 😊
awesome, great job with that Mustang shot and thanks for sending those in!
Great one. But dude, what's up with the squirrelly music during the final video? :D
Lol, I don't remember what music I used in this one. When I made this, I was still using the free RUclips Music Library, and kinda scraping the bottom of the barrel for goos tracks. Since then, I've switched to using Epidemic Sound, which is a lot less cheesy 👍
@@capturingthemachine Regardless! We still enjoy our vintage 911s, yes? That's the BIG benefit.
Great video, you really explained it well, thank you 🙏🏻
thanks you, I'm glad it was helpful!
Hmmmm.....need to watch those vertical lines. Unintentional photo bombs. Hard to shoot on the street without light poles and wires, etc. Use a circular polarizer, too
Yes, it can be really tricky. If the verticals are out of focus (through shallow depth of field) or not directly intersecting with the car, it's possible to get away with it. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the succinct video, just learning again and found it very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
